Lone Star - May 6 - Day 3 - Sailing and Fishing

Our third day of the trip was the kind where everything went right. At 0534 this morning the wind came up enough to turn off the engine and Lone Star once again became a sail boat. Although our speed was around 5 knots we felt it was better than paying the penalty in motoring hours. After everyone was up and breakfast was over we decided to hoist our mizzen ballooner sail. This is basically a spinnaker that is tacked to the cabin top behind the main mast. After hoisting the sail we were able to improve our speed by another knot or so and enjoyed a great day sailing at around 6 knots.

We did not have any luck fishing during our first two days, but continued to drag the two hand lines that Ron brought on board. Then around 1500 we hooked our first fish. It has a Mahi Mahi around two feet long and I can smell it being cooked right now. That would have been a very satisfying end to the fishing for the day, but we wanted to see if we could get something else and managed to snag another Mahi a little bit larger around 1700. The fish menu is now set and we have stopped fishing for the moment.

Just before sunset we brought down the mizzen ballooner and are running with our jib, stay-sail, mainsail and mizzen and making around 7.5 knots in a 12 knot breeze. The picture we sent is of Jim after bringing our fist fish on board.
