Free Cruising & Racing in the Society Islands

During the last week, the World ARC fleet have enjoyed a free cruising period in the surrounding islands of Tahiti, the Society Islands named by Captain James Cook. The islands are split into two groups, the Leeward and Windward Islands including the famous must see destinations of Tahiti, Bora Bora and Raiatea.

Following a Pacific crossing from the Galapagos Islands, many boats have been busy fixing various boat related issues in order to start Leg 5 of their circumnavigation. This said five of the fleet and crews from eight boats took their free cruising time to participate in the Tahiti Pear Regatta involving six races over a three day period. With a fleet of almost 40 there were a wide variety of yachts including a trimaran, small eighteen footers and the World ARC ocean cruising boats of Juno, Hugur, Exody, GarliX and A Plus 2.

The event took the fleet on a tour of the Society Islands finishing on a small motu (island) in the lagoon of Raiatea and Tahaa. The final evening was a chance for all sailors to get together and enjoy live music, fire displays, food and the prize giving for the regatta.

GarliX (Xp-44) who were competing in the racing division unfortunately fouled a line around their propeller causing them to retire from the last day racing. Exody however triumphed in the cruising division taking first place for the three days of racing.

Tomorrow the World ARC fleet will rendezvous in Raiatea after their time apart in  the Society Islands in preparation for the start of Leg 5 to Tonga via Suwarrow and Niue. The next few days will include farewell drinks, a skippers’ briefing and  provide the last opportunity to tour the island and complete final provisions before sailing west on Sunday.
