First Landfall in Salvador, Brazil

Following a slow crossing of the South Atlantic, Chika-lu, the first World ARC yacht to compete their final ocean crossing has arrived in Salvador, Brazil. The X-612 and her five crew arrived at the Terminal Naútico Marina in the early hours of this morning where they were welcomed with caipirinha cocktails and applause on the dock. The first to depart the isolated island of St Helena, the all German crew made good progress in the light but squally winds.

“The crossing was a mixture of light winds and high squalls. We have some sail repairs but apart from that the boat performed well and we’re looking forward to exploring Brazil”
Hubert – Skipper of Chika-lu

Mooring in the heart of Salvador, the fleet will fully experience the former capital of Brazil (1549 to 1763). 85 meters above the marina lays the historic city centre where a multitude of Renaissance architecture, beautiful squares and restaurants with local cuisine are found on every corner. Arriving a week before carnival only adds to their experience. A blend of colours, music and dancing progressively increases before the official opening of carnival next weekend.

During the fleets stay, beside the spectacle of carnival, they can look forward to a guided city tour, cruising briefing detailing passage tips for the free sail north to Fortaelza, and a welcome function in the vibrant Pelourinho square. The next eight days will see the remainder of the fleet make landfall, marking a significant moment in their circumnavigation as each yacht and crew complete their final ocean crossing with World ARC. A fantastic achievement!
