Great Escape of Southampton - Day 15 15 44N 52 13W

Day 15

Adding to our plant woes, our inverter which works off the motor by converting its 12 volt supply to a 240 supply is largely used to power our boat’s computer – yesterday, it decided to act up for a couple of hours.  Its failure not only would close off Em’s navigation aids, which we could learn to tolerate, but more importantly it would close off our daily blog to YOU, our adoring public!  Luckily, this catastrophe has been averted – and Yahoo users worldwide can still gain access to the unique happenings on the Great Escape!

So what’s new, you ask?  Well, yesterday started in strong variable winds gusting at 25 knots combined with periods of torrential rain.  Em’s decision to head west north west to escape these bleak waters resulted in some late afternoon sunshine.  After a short period of motoring, improving winds have taken us back on a course heading directly for St Lucia – this has continued overnight with some fine sailing conditions under some stunning starry skies.

Chinese laundry conditions shaped our day as we wrung out the boat’s wet gear and attempted to dry out John and Graham’s wet bedding – which led to some revised sleeping arrangements last night, which I choose not to report here.  Enough to say that those missing a bed found sleep hard to come by! Today we hope for better drying conditions and our salon returns to some normalcy.  Spirits rose when king chef Kaare cooked his king fish special – the Norwegian granddad is our best cook – an opinion he happily shares!

Stephen, in the company of Gregorio and Kaare, in his daybreak watch reported a flying fish of extraordinary capabilities – it flew across the cockpit from port to starboard returning to the sea from whence it came – a double twisted pike a la Tom Daly was noted.  Stephen’s next reported sighting will be the Flying Dutchman or maybe a Flying Norwegian (but please not our cook!)
