Puddle Jumper - blog 6th Dec 2012

Skipper

Just in case you were wondering where we are headed for, we noticed from the weather grib files a hole about 150 mls across with no wind. So we set off South to try and get around its Southern edge, very fast sail Dickie and i never saw less than 9 kts and did see a sustained 11.5 kts. Unfortunately we are not going to miss it so expect little progress and even hotter conditions which are even now hot. On the up side, on the other side it should be ideal for the big Parasail. WB

Letter from over Halfway to America by A Cook (L. J. Silver/JAD)

So here we all are, on the good ship Puddlejumper with Captain Blue Beard and his not so scurvy crew, on account of the significant cargo of fresh fruit and vegetables placed on board during our provisioning in Las Palmas. The Captain was convinced that we would be the first mid Atlantic mobile fruit and veg store and constantly moaned about having no more storage space. Since we set sail, there has been a strict regime of enforced fresh fruit and veg consumption to the extent that there have been discussions as to what is a safe daily dose of tomatoes.

We are all very grateful for the unstinting effort by Mrs. Blue Rinse Beard in the run up to our trip (planning, menus, manifests, shopping lists, etc. etc.), and for all the time she spent in Las Palmas with Mrs. Special Kay in provisioning the boat.

Also thanks for all the cake, more of which will be discussed later.

What of the crew? The skipper, a paragon of virtue and good humour is being ably assisted by the grossly omniscient Blofeldt and Hansel ‘Henry the Navigator’ (aka the Young ‘un on account of him claiming a Carer’s allowance for looking after all the old g+ts on the trip). We also have the Water Boy (a David Niven lookalike) Captain Flint (the purser and  in charge of all operations below stairs) and his assistant L. J. Silver.

What have we been eating apart from tomatoes? Every mid morning with our cup of tea, Captain Flint has been dispensing Pieces of Cake, Special Kay’s Fruit cake, Mrs. Blue Rinses currant and Isi’s cherry. All wonderfully moist and gratefully received.

Two nights ago, we had Ribeye, which was going to be incorporated into a Stroganoff, but Captain Flint insisted on Pieces of Steak.

We are all looking forward to meeting up with our little treasures on St. Lucia.  J.D.
