Poespas - day 7

Day 7

What a difference a day makes. We are now well and truly in tropical sailing conditions. Shirts came off in the very warm sunshine and even at night our comfy duvets are not strictly required anymore. We still have the winds right behind us as we are steering a course along the great circle track towards a waypoint just north of St Lucia. Whether we are in the trade winds is debatable. They are supposed to be blowing from the north east, and for the past 24 hours or so they have been easterly at 20 to 25 knots, with the odd gust to 30. Later on and further west along our track they are forecast to go east south east to even south east. Could this be due to climate change, I wonder, or is it merely because of a small depression forming a couple of 100 miles to our northwest?

In any case all this sailing downwind and resulting rolling along our axis has not done wonders for catching up on sleep. Yours truly has had trouble getting some good quality sleep in his usually very comfortable pilot berth, but at least one of my crew seems to sleep very soundly, so soundly in fact that it takes the equivalent of a nuclear explosion next to his head to awaken him for watch duties. Apart from that revelation we just got on with our daily business of ocean sailing, and we also caught another nice fish that shall be consumed with relish tonight. We have now moved the ship's clock back by two ours since we have passed 30 degrees west, and as every school boy knows the sun moves 15 degrees in every hour. I shall now pass the helm over to my crew.

Roger

Another weekend over. So back to it. Another UFO (see previous days log) caught today this time expertly landed by Axel now it is only the skipper and Ellie to land a fish for a full house.

The first flying fish of the trip landed onboard last night, a brilliant blue back with translucent wings, I threw him back but in the morning there were two more on deck. ..Maybe they are the seas version of the lemming ?

Just a few more days of fruit left and with a few rumblings in the ranks about scurvy. I will have to see if I can convince them that bread and fish are good to abate scurvy. Shouldn't be too hard. A few other concerns have raised their heads. Andy and I were discussing favourite cleaning products as we had some burnt on bread and butter pudding !.. We realised in time and went to different ends of the boat. We then did some manly fishing and talked boats. It's all ok now. Axle dropped his phone and the screen has gone blank, much like his face when I asked him if he could still get a signal ..

Anyway, fish for supper and the pigs leg still swings from the mizzen

Andy's view from the crew

Don't we just love running downwind with the sea on the quarter. You would probably pay a fiver and have to queue up for three quarters of an hour at Alton Towers to have this quality ride. The autohelm is coping in the main, with the occasional OFH moment. I've decided to christen it Anton as we are a truly international crew. Luckily it will soon be beer ration time ( one can a day I'll have you know Pinnochio :OD ) I've offered to get Anton's for him and promised Roger I'll give it to him.

My day has been consumed with getting the bread pudding off the one serving dish(largely unsuccessful). It has become personal now.

Fishing exploits saw Dr Axel land the fish. Having seen him offer euthanasia to the catch I've decided to cancel my appointment with him for some minor ailment. Spookily enough he couldn't see me till next week anyway. As they say you can take the sailor from the doctor but you can never..

Ellie preparing the fish tor tonight's repas. No cabbage in sight unless it's been secreted in the sweet. It smell's great anyway.

Roger invested his trust in me this afternoon to suspend him over the swim ladder in the following sea, hanging onto his safety line while he fixed things. I think it's a turning point in our relationship.

Fish and beer await
