Johanem - 2nd December 2012

20 degrees 45.794N 28 degrees 54.076W

875 nautical miles sailed, less than 2,000 to go! Jim says we are sailing at about the same speed he ran the London Marathon in 2008, so it's a bit like a jog across the ocean.

Five days at sea and we have settled into a comfortable routine of watches and domestic duties. The Johanem Angling Club trophy cabinet remains sadly empty again today, in spite of the many shapes and sizes of lures being tried and lost. Each day, Tony assures us there will be fish for supper.

Today we used an expensive Australian 3 times world champion shrimp lure that was guaranteed to bring success. The fish were indeed attracted by the lures, carefully eating the whole plastic fish but leaving the hooks intact on the end of the line. The humiliation of being the only ARC boat yet to catch a single fish is raw as we listen enviously to the daily tales from other boats on our radio net of catches so large as to drag the boat backwards. When, if, we eventually catch the elusive fish, it will have cost hundreds of pounds in lost tackle.

So, thank God for the freezer full of meat. This evening we enjoyed beef casserole with potatoes and cabbage, with a veg option for me. We may be in the middle of the Atlantic ocean, but aboard Johanem we remain forever England.

We all miss our loved ones. You know who you are.

God bless
Susie
