Rivendell - Log 6 & 7 - "When it Rains it Pours"

1 Dec 2012

Well we traveled for two days hoping for calmer seas in order to stich the mainsail. Andy, Schaefer, Ian, and Ben worked on it very diligently. They taped it, then put on a patch and stitched it. Total time spent about four and a quarter hours. So in the early evening we came into the wind and hoisted the main sail. The evening winds were not too bad, normally 18knots, with gusts to 26 knots - so not too bad. So the day was spent focusing on the repair of the main sail. We have been sailing under genoa jib alone.

Making very good time, we continue to catch the fleet. Taryn continues to do well with the cooking. We watched a movie in the evening "Cockney verses Zombie" - had some major stars in it from yesteryear, but I'm glad I didn't have to pay for it. Cheers!

Early this morning we sighted two different sailboats - probably from the"ARC", but they did not answer Andy's calls on our VHF radio - they probably had theirs turned off. We also sighted a very large commercial fisherman. Probably dragging large nets. Around 11:00am our time a school of Atlantic Bottle Nosed Dolphins surrounded "Rivendell" and put on a show.

We also learned that during the night that both the main sail and the genoa jib both tore. Thats now three tears for the main sail, and the first for the genoajib. The tear for the main sail is in another new area, fortunately small. It's currently down and Andy, Schaefer and Ben are working on it. The rip in the genoa is another story. It will require a fair amount of material. A new main sail had already been planned and is supposed to be delivered to Antigua (it's a tax haven), but the genoa is a different story. So we are running on both the stay sail and our faithful diesel engine. The swells are larger today so we are getting quite a ride.

Cheers!
