Adagio - the good, the bad, the unexpected

Hi family, friends, and everyone,
All of the Adagio crew are fine, and anxiously awaiting our arrival in Tortola. Lots of good things happening here: great people on other boats, and the rally organizers have been wonderful. Our week or so in Hampton was filled with fun activities and very valuable seminars (even though we were in hurricane mode for 4 days. Adagio is sailing extremely well, despite a few days of storms which have left us exhausted and wet. We are around the Florida keys area only quiet a bit east of them. Also great was a chance to shower last night. Not under ideal circumstances, but still, it was wonderful.
While the majority of our time has been good on this passage, the wind, seas and storms have made it very difficult for us "virgin" offshore sailors. Trying to get a meal in the ever moving oven is a real challenge. It takes two to get the job done. Some nights we haven't even bothered with a meal. Just too difficult with the seas. We are definitely not starving, as we have plenty of ready to east stuff. All of the crew have multiple bruises. We've been thinking about having a bruise contest when we reach our destination: biggest, smallest, most colorful, most unique shape, etc.

Some unexpected things we have encountered are: the tiny birds that seem to be in the middle of the ocean, and stop on board for a rest. Last night we had a goldfinch who sacked out under the GPS, and left at sunrise. Where do they come from? Another unexpected is the gorgeous color of the ocean. It truly is the deep "blue" sea. I guess we had expected more traffic throughout this sail, but we went 2 days without seeing another vessel. It's just vast ocean from every direction. Another unexpected is how fast our kindles use up the batteries and have to be charged. Sounded like a great option so we wouldn't clutter the boat with books. We have managed just fine. I believe the whole crew has gotten better at expecting the unexpected and are now more ready for problems when they arise.

The crew on Adagio is fantastic. We can sit in companionable silence for very long time periods. We all respect each other's space, but are also there in a flash when someone needs a hand. Couldn't ask for better people. The captain has been tired. No matter who is on watch he's listening in case he's needed. Hard to relax when he's in charge of ship and crew. But we all have maintained our sense of humor and have learned to just "go with the flow". This certainly is an interesting adventure.

I'll try to write again when we get to Tortola.

Laurie
