Usquabae of Fife - Monday 4th June: An unexpected anchorage

Monday 4th June and it was good to be off at last. We were glad to take the opportunity of the weather window for a sail to Falmouth, where we will sit out the expected bad weather prior to crossing Biscay. We had a relaxing start to our journey, taking time to get more familiar with some of our newer equipment on board. Although initially motor sailing we enjoyed a good few hours sailing as the wind picked up slightly. About six miles off Falmouth and getting ready to head in, we suddenly were making no way and investigation showed us to be made fast to a fishing buoy with rope around our rudder. Try as we could we were unable to free ourselves and having informed Rally Control of our plight, we sought advice from Falmouth Coastguard.

Falmouth Lifeboat was launched and two crew members put aboard to assist. Eventually freed from our 'unplanned anchorage' the lifeboat towed us into Mylor Marina - a welcome sight.

Now sitting safely in Mylor awaiting weather for the next leg of the journey which we are sure will be exciting, but we would prefer without the drama.

We would like to say a big thankyou to the lifeboat crew, who were fantastic and also to our fellow Ralliers who were there to welcome us back and assist in taking lines etc. A special thanks to Scott for doning his wet suit and diving gear, braving the cold to free the rudder from rope. Thanks also to Yacht Gida who offered assistance whilst we were awaitng the Lifeboat.

Please remember support our lifeboats..... you never know when you might need them!
