Voyageur - Log day 206 - Happy in Hout Bay

16 December 2010

The longer we are here the more this place grows on us. There is a real community of liveaboards who are only too willing and able to assist you with anything to do with boats. Anna does canvas work and is remaking our aft deck cushions, the originals now completely ruined by UV. Charles who has contacts everywhere, has sourced all our Onan generator spares, a new oar from Zodiac, lost overboard, and John, our lovely neighbour has proved to be a real "Jack of all trades"! Everyone here is exceptionally friendly, there is a wealth of restaurants from the famous Mariner's Wharf where we have booked our Christmas lunch to the more modest fish and chipperies. It has proved to be a good base from which to explore Cape Town the surrounding area. The main town and local shopping centre are within easy walking distance. Every day there is a colourful African market on the quayside and every Sunday a much grander one which you can access by a walk across Hout Bay's beautiful white sand beach. We paid a long overdue visit to a local dentist and it came as no surprise that we both needed a crown. It will be half the cost of the same treatment in Europe. In fact we like it so much here we have decided not to go around to the V & A waterfront marina after all but remain here for the whole duration of our stay in South Africa.
