Crazy Horse - Oct 27

Yesterday, after a night of being woken up yet again by a tsunami warning, we got our car. We stand out like a sore thumb since we are only one of few with a black car. Seems like all the cars look alike and are white and tiny. Finally we are driving on the correct side of the road again. We are learning how to be flexible however.

The tsunami turned out to be a warning that we got well after the threat was gone. We heard that the tide here went up 20 in. We must have all slept through the highest of the tide surge. Some of the boats on the other side of the island must have had some damage. That was what the port police said. Guess our angels must have been saying some strong words in our behalf. Will catch you up with any other news I hear. Yesterday we were away all day with the car so I didn't hear about the damage.

What a wonderful island this is. It seems to be clean and good roads all the way to the volcano. Yes, they are twisty and turny but well maintained. They have lots of mesh and wire over the rock walls by the roads to prevent falling rocks.

We visited a vanilla plantation, a waterfall, ate at a Creole restaurant, and stopped for pictures by the volcano. The houses are colorful and well kept up. Looks like they are constructing quite a few beach type homes here. This is a big tourist vacation spot. The restaurant is owned by a French woman and her husband who speak no English. Good thing we had Jutta with us who translated for us or God only knows what we would have eaten.

We did find a mall to the south of us in our travels so perhaps we will go there one day and visit the Aquarium they have here too. Last night we missed the quiz game at the le Dodo Bar here by the quay. We were finishing up our circumnavigation by car of this island and missed it. Hope it went well and fun had by all!

The rest of our time here we have to our own devices to investigate Reunion. We will probably leave here on Monday the first and head to Richard's Bay. That gives us some time to see most of the tourist spots.

Rosemary, Bill and Matt
