Free Spirit - Log 15: 24 May 2015

I have noted the young whipper-snapper's denials but they cut no ice with me. And, as for that lawyer. Like all of his ilk he will sing anyone's tune for the right 'consideration'. When I do catch the little blighter with chocolaty fingers he will have to be taught a lesson but I'm thinking that keel-hauling might be a bit harsh, especially as not many keel-haulees survive. Sixty lashes of me ol' cat-o-nine tails should be sufficient to see justice done.
It's been the devil's luck on this trip so far. Thieving crew being just one of a whole load of aggravations. Today Mr. Mainsail had an enforced rest. And tomorrow too by the looks of it. He's not too unhappy about that but the rest of us are not best pleased. All of the bolts holding the in-mast furling system sheared in the night last night jamming the whole bleeding thing. We were lucky to be able to get Mr. Mainsail down at all. Just as well because Free Spirit is now being battered by howling gales and tumultuous seas. Some progress was made this morning to repair the damage, drilling out sheared bolts halfway up the mast, but by afternoon conditions were just too damn rough and we had to retreat. It became a case of 'battening down the hatches'. There was one major compensation at the end of the day however. Despite Free Spirit being tossing about violently Mrs. Trouble still managed to cook up some great grub and all hands were truly well fed. Best galley maid on the high seas and worth her weight in gold that woman!
It's getting dark once more and there are flashes of lightening in the distance. The Dolphins and whale, that graced us with brief visits today, have retreated to the comfortable depths while we humans remain on the surface tossing about in our frail craft, with the wind still howling in the rigging. It looks like an uncomfortable night ahead. Think I'll have a piece of me chocolate.
