El Mundo - 06/12 - Spinnaker was up....briefly

Wind during the day pretty steady and, as it veered slightly, we set the kite during late morning and were making 9 knots.... very nice. We had just finished a gespachio soup lunch when there was a loud bang as the end of the bowsprit detached itself. We managed to drop the sail on deck. The pullpit had been bent a bit with the vertical force (the only thing holding the spinnaker was a safety strop), so our guardrails are a bit slack. We bent it back a bit but some further remedial work will be required at the other end. The bowsprit has been rerigged but we now need to wait for some very light airs to reraise the kite to try and furl it again (still hoping we'll need it for the final leg into St Lucia). The crew are all in good spirits and just took it in their stride...some great teamwork ensured the drama didn't turn into a crisis.
Amanda entertained us with her 7 songs from key points in her life...not sure what was worse Barry Manilow or Adam and the Ants!
Our fishing efforts reached a low.....no fish again....but a bird attacked the lures and snagged a wing. We were able to bring it in and cut the line and it flew away OK.
We have just completed 2000 miles of the voyage, so around 800 miles to go.
Happy St Nicholas Day (or Sint Niklaas in Belgium).
