Log Day 6 – Squall

Dear Blog,

After more than four days on a close haul starboard tack we could finally ease our sheets and spend some time without heeling. How much easier it is to perform the simplest tasks without this constant fight with what is up and down. We used this opportunity to clean the cockpit, to check our vegetable inventory and prepare two good meals (chili con carne and bulgur with sardines and mackerel fillies).

One of the main queries of the day was of course how much progress we had made over the past 24 hours. During the afternoon we were informed that we have gone up one position (which makes for a 3rd place) and that we had managed to log 182 nm yesterday. Not bad at all.

We have continued our efforts to catch a good sized BM (Blue Marlin), unfortunately without real success yet. The combination of high boat speed and a somewhat reluctant skipper, i.e. reluctant to press the brakes as soon as there is something on the hook, makes fishing a real challenge.

Finally, we had our first squall today. At the time it was completely dark. Our response was somewhat slow, but we (all five aboard) managed the situation quite sufficiently.

The Skipper
