Thula - day 3

Two days into the race we can say that we have fully arrived on the Thula. Fortunately we have had no instances of sea sickness in our crew so far. This is most likely due to Dieter's gigantic collection of sea sickness medicine which he distributes generously among the crew. That way not even the rough waves on our first day of sailing were able to upset our stomachs. The best thing about this is that we did not have to miss out on any of Liesel's great meals that she has prepared in advance and is miraculously putting together in the pantry even under the most challenging weather conditions. To give you an impression: Yesterday we had a variety of tapas (delicious pimientos, great Serrano ham and guacamole) as starter (!) followed by great german soul food: a chicken fricassee with rice. Anyone who was secretly hoping that this trip might serve as a convenient way of shaping up for the winter has by now realised that this has been a false hope. Quite the opposite is the case, I hope we all still fit into our bathing suits and shorts when we arrive in the caribbean. As to the weather we have been really lucky, as well. After a slightly rough start the weather is now becoming noticeably milder and warmer (we are not too far north of the Cape Verde Islands now). The wind is no longer chilly but a nice warm breeze. Long trousers and sweaters are gradually being exchanged for t-shirts and shorts. The sky at night is simply breath taking, the stars are incredibly bright and we spot shooting stars again and again. This makes even the three-hour night watches (from 12-3am and from 3am to 6am) pass really quickly. Our fishing efforts have proven quite fruitless so far, the only result so far being one ripped-off lure. Jakob is strongly determined to change this situation and studies all the available literature on fishing on board - let's hope our luck turns soon. If everything fails we will have to go for the dolphin's that are accompanying our boat from time to time.

All the best from the Thula,

Jakob
