Second Wind - Settling into life on the high seas

From the calms of our previous blog when we tried out our fishing gear and Karen practiced her newly taught skills of taking a sextant reading and calculating our position (to within 40 miles .... not bad!), the clouds then rolled in and the wind filled in from about ESE at about 10-12 knots, which led to more pounding into the waves and less comfort, especially for those trying to sleep in the forecabin. Today the wind shifted to the NW and has strengthened so we are enjoying a nice broad reach in bright sunny conditions with two reefs in the mainsail and our small staysail. The boat feels very comfortable and is handling the slightly confused seas very nicely so we are making good progress at about 7-8 knots. It is back to shorts and a T-shirt weather today.

We have adopted a watch system with 2 people on watch at all times but a new person coming on watch every 3 hours. It seems to be working out quite well for us as we each try to sleep for one of our 6 hour off-shifts and snooze for part of the other off shift (if necessary). We have an early main meal of the day so all the clearing up can be done before darkness rolls in. We have had success so far in joining in on the twice daily rally roll calls, which is when we find out how our position compares with other boats in the rally. I think we could get used to this life!!

Looking forward to reading all your many comments on our blog when we get to Tortola....
