Nexus - Bay of Islands, Northern Lau Group, Fiji - the coolest anchorage we've been in so far!

Vanua Balavu, Northern Lau Group, Fiji has a bay on the North side of the Atoll, called "The Bay of Islands" which is the coolest anchorage we've been in so far. We did a very long overnight sail from Albert Bay on the northwest coast of Rabi, all the way here last night. We struggled to keep the boat slow enough to arrive at daylight but for most of the trip the wind was under 7 kts which was perfect for doing a bash to windward back to the Lau Group. We motorsailed some and sailed some on and off through the night, and sailed through a strong squall that brought 23kts on the nose toward morning. Most people don't backtrack this far after clearing in on the main islands, but we were intrigued from sailing past the Exploring Island group on our way in, and it is well worth the trip! We did our Sevusevu ceremony and presented Kava to the chief, and were granted permission to visit the islands. We toured the village, school and church, gave supplies to the school, and fishing gear, sugar and milk to the locals and hosted the Chief's spokesman and his wife on NEXUS for tea. The next morning we sailed around to the Bay of Islands...an amazing bay filled with undercut mushroom shaped rock outcroppings and dense jungle foliage surrounded by deep blue water. There are dozens or perhaps hundreds of them with little passages and lagoons between and coral heads you have to avoid as you pick your way through the maze. It is simply magic! We delivered some watermaker parts to a neighboring boat from town, and we're all looking forward to a snorkel safari in the morning!
