Nexus - Suwarrow is Paradise again!

Suwarrow is a very remote atoll, about 11 miles across, with several islands on it's perimeter. One of them we anchored alongside of for the last two nights was absolutely magic.

This was the island Tom Neil spend 37 years on as it's only resident hermit, and welcomed cruisers for years and years. We walked around his cabin and the "Suwarrow Yacht Club" which was built in his honor in 2001 for cruisers to camp or just leave flags, notes and exchange books. The island is classic, covered with palms and beautiful beaches, with water colors ranging from all shades of blue and green across the reefs surrounding it. Hammocks are all around the island made out of fishing nets that have washed ashore. We walked the perimeter of the island, and swam off the beach. We enjoyed kayaking to and from the island as the approach is too shallow for our dingy.

We snorkeled several reefs in the lagoon in crystal clear blue water with beautiful fish, vibrant reefs, and MULTITUDES of sharks. At one point we had 15 circling around Nexus and several with us snorkeling. We went looking for the "false killer wales" and large manta rays that frequent the inner lagoon, but found none in their usual snorkel spots, we believe it is too early in the season.

Tomorrow we plan to leave for Nuie, as the anchorage is full right now and the next wave of boats is expected to start arriving tomorrow, and the winds are favorable for our passage at the moment.

This is a special national park in the Cook Islands, a truly unspoiled paradise to enjoy. We picked up as much trash and plastic as we could off the beach to do our part to preserve it before we left.
