Abraxas - Life on ABRAXAS

Day three, the crew on Abraxas are settling into life at sea.  After an initial spell of sickness, everyone is in good form.  Nick tried his luck at fishing and has only caught a piece of blue rope – it wasn’t very tasty.   The boat is handling well with a fully reefed main and partially reefed headsail.  We flew the parasailor yesterday for several hours and decided to drop after a big wave caught us by surprise.  Although we can receive email and are picking up some VHF transmissions, especially those from Starblazer each day, our internet connection is too slow to get the yellow brick information.  Therefore, we phone friends ashore for an update on our position.

An exhausted ring neck dove landed on board yesterday, poor thing was so worn out that it stayed hanging on to our bimini for a few hours before christening the boat and departing.  We are not sure that it will have made it back to shore in one piece.  This morning, just after dawn, we enjoyed a pod of dolphins swimming with the boat and they stayed for a good 20 minutes keeping us entertained.

Igor has been assigned head of media and is taking the role very seriously taking photographs at every opportunity.  They are unfortunately too large to email though.  We were interested to read Imagine’s blog re power management, we also have a fridge and freezer on board and although we have an EFOY fuel cell to trickle charge our batteries, this is put to the test when we cook as our oven is alongside our freezer and it has to work overtime to keep cool.

We have a dry boat so it was lovely to hear you all talking about your gin and tonics in your cockpits on the first evening!!!

Anyway signing off for now and we will try and blog more ofter I promise.

Gary, Karen, Drew, Nick ,Igor, Cor and Mike.
