Crazy Horse - May 23
Crazy Horse left with Ocean Jasper for Raratonga yesterday at approximately 9:30am. Wild Tigris decided to stay at Bora Bora for another day or so. Grand Filou was still there also perhaps waiting for more crew and repairs. Mattdelivered one Crazy Horse World Tour t-shirt to the owner Jessica before we departed. BBYC is in the midst of a major reconstruction but they are open for business despite all the construction. We had a wonderful time there meeting new folks and reuniting with the other ARCers. Our best wishes go out to Jessica and Teva in their recovery from the hurricane devastation. They are certainly a determined and hard working couple. Our last night at Bora Bora was spent going for a dinghy ride through a downpour for one last visit to Bloody Mary's. While sitting.

Whitbread - The Management
Sailing on Whitbread requires lots of management of various issues. We have fuel management, water management, food management etc. etc. and if anything goes wrong then its obviously poor management of that issue. For example, yesterday we had very bad "sugar management". We appear to have run out of sugar on board and currently blame Wolfy who has been having more than his ration with 4 sugars in his coffee. He is now responsible for good sugar management on the future legs.Todays issue being raised is "shade management". Without a bimini in the cockpit and in the midday sun at 10' south of the equator it doesn't take long for the helmsman to turn medium-well done. We have resorted to various ways of creating good shade management, from wrapping t-shirts on our heads or draping towels.

Lady Kay - generator trouble
HiOnly 445nm to go - made v good progress overnight at the cost of being thrown into the air a regular intervals whilst trying to sleep. I had to prize my grip from the mattress when I woke up.Generator stalled last night. Michael changed the fuel filter, which was full of muck - impossible to get clean fuel in Galapagos - but unfortunately we still have a problem - possibly with the coolant system or the impeller. Both engines are working, so not too much of a problem as we can use these to generate power. Our useful manual, badly translated from the German, contains some wonderful advice e.g. Attention! Before opening the de-aerating points the generator must be stagnant!! and ' the coolant must be refilled so long, up to recognizes that the cooling water level does not sag any.

Voyageur - Log day 95 - Jibe, jibe & jibe again
22 May 2010Day three and a day beset with squalls. Poles out this way, poles out that way. We jibed, jibed and jibed again. I could almost hear Voyageur saying, "for goodness sake guys make up your mind"! Asolare overtook us last night finally disappearing over the horizon by lunchtime. Liza who had been playing cat and mouse with us over the last couple of days also suddenly reappeared and swept by us on the opposite tack. We had been discussing putting up the ballooner for two days now and were still no further forwards in making a decision. Trouble is we are just too lazy and lack the competitive spirit. I much prefer to work out the lunch and dinner menu than the sail plan. Besides, I have got into a really good book. 'The Last Voyage of the Lucette' was a remake of Dougal.

A Lady - Sailing around the World
FRIDAY 21st MAY 2010 ( Skippers Grandaughter....... Rachel Hyde.........birthday ) Lots of showers and wind during the night, However, no traffic. Donal tried the SSB,but with little or no success, a range of about 30 miles, the VHF will do that distance for us now since we installed a new ariel. Skipper is still in a sleep mode and spent most of the morning asleep on deck again, but feeling a little better. Taking the advice of Leah and Annette; stuff yourself full of Vitimen " C". Donal and John spent most of their time playing Sudoku, Donal has the old fashion way......... a bookJohn has the modern way................an electronic book Fishing..... Cleone - Leg 4 Day 17 - Complacency
Pride comes before a fall, but what comes after Complacency?I can tell you when you are sailing; tearing one of your best and most important sails. The Skipper was calmly relaxing in his bunk, thinking that every thing's cool but a touch windy. The crew's on deck, thinking probably the same kind of thoughts. So the Skipper (being the skipper) has a bright idea. What about another reef in the mainsail? Well, the crew, being the crew, think that it is a splendid idea, and so the drama begins. But first to set the scene. Cleone has an inner forestay, off which to fly our storm-sails, as I think I've already explained. Partly because the original place it was secured to when not in use has broken, and partly to make it more convenient should it be needed, when at sea this forestay is.

Kasuje - daily log Wed 26th March
Hi all,This will be our last log on this passage as we have some 140 nm to go and anticipate making landfall about 10 pm tonight our time. That's 07.30 Thursday morning in the UK.Many thanks for all your emails during the passage, we await them with eager anticipation and your good wishes help us through the less pleasant moments. Thanks also to my great crew on this leg ,firstly for looking after me during my bout of Montezuma's and for there patience on this long passage. This is the longest single passage and the furthest from landfall we will encounter on the whole world cruise and I think it is fair to say that we will all be glad to hit land.( Well not exactly hit land but gently come alongside). Fortunately the passage has been without incident, just the usual maintenance items and.

Voyageur - Log day 94 - Westward Ho!
20 May 2010We are now on leg 7 and for this part, the rally was split into two groups. The first (those who did not take part in the Pearl Regatta) left three days ahead of us for Suwarrow in the northern Cook Islands and then on to Niue. This is because there is limited space for yachts within the Suwarrow lagoon and not enough moorings in Niue to accommodate us all. So Voyageur is in group two and at twelve o'clock opposite the Bora Bora Yacht Club the starting gun fired for our departure. Seven yachts crossed the start line, Voyageur, Ciao, Noeluna, Asolare, Liza, Tucanon and Sunrise. Skylark and Chessie are held up in Tahiti. Once through the pass it seemed that we would have the wretched light and fickle winds that had dogged us on the first couple of days of the regatta but by mid.

Crazy Horse - May 21-Bora Bora
This will probably be our last day in Bora Bora. We have enjoyed our stay here and becoming members of the Bora Bora Yacht Club. The family atmosphere and their love and care of the local homeless animals and friendly and welcoming attitude toward transients is refreshing. Teiva and Jessica are the young owners of BBYC and have a lot on their plate with the reconstruction of the club since the hurricane came through here in Jan. '10.Yesterday Bill and I and Chessie went for a tour of the island with Henry who's family has lived here for generations. He showed us the anti-aircraft guns still left here from WWII. Some of the US soldiers from that war never left. So there are Americans dotting these islands leftover from WWII. You can get the idea that this is a wonderful place to live if.

08:39.89S 127:29.30W Tuesday PM Pacific OceanThe wind and sea have been a little more Atlantic-like today with food, drinks and bodies all cheerily defying gravity when you least expect it.There have been few signs of life out there in the Pacific. No fish, no boats and no Bank Holiday traffic jams. Just some seabirds now and then which seem to be following us. So much for the old navigational method of following them!Bikini of the day - blue strings with big butterflies.M.

Kasuje - Pigs might fly, no I think you mean fish!
Hi everyone, Angela, Bruce and the Skipper put their heads together today to try and work out the itinerary for the rest of our trip . We have roughly 7 days to get from the Marquesas to Tahiti which is about 800 miles away. The distance between the two islands is not that far, but there are many islands in-between that we would like to visit. Also, and most importantly which island would be the correct place to open the celebratory champagne, this big decision is still undecided. I thought i would go against the grain and suggest now! We are all getting rather excited at the prospect of seeing land. We will get to the Marquesas on either Wednesday night or Thursday morning. Although you may think after 3 weeks at sea, what difference does it make which of the days we get.

A Lady - " A LADY TRIP " Sailing around the World,
THURSDAY 20th MAY 2010 (presently at sea, between Bora Bora and the Cook Islands ) We had a good night at sea, just one or two squalls, but even at that, the wind never went above 28 knots, but the squalls brought plenty of rain , and umbrella's are useless at sea. Not having the radar is a bit of a bummer, it is great for identifying the squalls and their direction. we miss that piece of equipment. However, we have the AIS working again , so we could see " Ronja" and " Dreamcatcher" for most of the night untill we went too far ahead of them and lost the signals. The range must be approx 15 / 20 miles, depending on the height of their AIS ariels. Early morning saw plenty of cloud and wind, A steady 22 / 25 knot trade wind, so we were averaging 8 knots..

Voyageur - Log day 93 - A "bizarre" request
18 May 2010 Straight after breakfast David and I took the tender around the next bay. In spite of our reservations at the time, we think the new tender is a brilliant little craft. From Zodiac called Zoom it planes extremely well, better than our other one. We still hope to have that one repaired when we reach Oz however. David went off to the bank for US dollars for Niue, while I went off to buy our fresh fruits and vegetables for the next couple of weeks to come. Examining his passport the bank teller seemed to take more than a passing interest in David asking where he was from and where he was staying. Finally he asked if he could speak to him outside. He left his station behind the counter and once outside asked if David had a weapon to sell!!! When David politely declined he asked.

A Lady - " A LADY TRIP" Sailing around the World
WEDNESDAY 19th MAY 2010 ( Presently about to leave Bora Bora for the Cook Islands) Crew for this trip :- Stephen Hyde ( Skipper,) Donal Mc Clement, and John ( The scot ) Another beautifull day in Bora Bora. Interesting thing, looking back on the trip so far, and it has been a facinating trip, but nothing would or could prepare you for a trip like this, ( even with the help of World ARC, and they are great ) Almost all , if not all boats in the fleet, including ourselves have problems from time to time with things going wrong or breaking down. then there is the logistics of getting spare parts to where ever the boat is and then trying to find a quack to do the repairs ( thats if we cant do them ourselves) Believe you me, all this just gobbles up time and.

Jus'Do It 3 - a catch!
25.03.08 1pmWe continue to goosewing in 15-20 knots of wind, constant East direction all day. Decided not to gibe, and continue on parallel to the rum line . We pass miles and miles of long line fishing lines, see a large fishing boat on the horizon and hear what sounds like Japanese chat on the VHF. No other yachts to be seen. Mid-afternoon – A CATCH! We manage to hook and land a Long-bill Spearfish. The whole crew plays a part in getting in the long awaited catch of the voyage: Annie winches the line in, Ronnie pulls and guides the line, Ian is once again head gaffer, and Stewy videos the whole process! The fish is 5’ long and takes a good few halfs of vodka to knock it out! (following initial shot of Soft & Gentle Shampoo!) In no time at all, Stewy has it skinned and.

Voyageur - Log day 92 - "Under the weather"
17 May 2010It blew all night long but thankfully without the rain squalls. David was "under the weather" metaphorically speaking. He had an upset stomach from the night before and was not feeling up to making the passage to Bora Bora. I have the constitution of an ox and was therefore fine. He did however manage to flush the watermaker through with 50 litres of fresh water, thinking that the membrane might be clogged up with salt. That seemed to do the trick for it ran for an hour and a half and made 100 litres. So we are feeling a little bit more optimistic about it. We caught up on some lost sleep and enjoyed a simple evening meal of mince and tatties, retiring to bed early. Perhaps we are getting a bit long in the tooth for late night partying. However we did meet a very nice French.

2. Duogen.

Put your dog and your wife in the boot of the car for an hour. When you open the trunk, who is really happy to see you? The butcher patrol this dawn accounted for 31 flying fish on deck. Only 1 of eating size the rest were about 2" long and if we had ground them all up together they might have made 1 fish cake. The real line went out at dawn as today the chefs have said they want a fish as the freezer is now empty. Good wind shift last night and we are now on a port tack heading directly to Hiva Oa. Cleone - Leg 4 Day 16 - SYSTEMS
You could describe a yacht as a system of systems. Big Technical InterludeI have described Cleone's sails as her heart, lungs and muscles. The bones for these vital organs are her spars - the main and mizzen masts with their spreaders (cross-trees), their two booms and the spinnaker boom. Holding these spars in place upright on the deck are the stays - nine for the Main-mast and eight for the Mizzen (for the Main: fore and aft lowers x 2, capshrouds x 2, forestay, inner-forestay and backstay, for the Mizzen: forestays x 2, capshrouds x 2, aft lowers x 2 and running backstays x 2). You could describe these and the running rigging as Cleone's sinews. The running rigging are the 26 different pieces of cordage (rope) used to control the sails on the Main-mast, and the 14 needed for the.

MONDAY 17th May 2010 ( Presently in Bora bora, ) Constitution day, Norway, Usless information, 10pm here in Bora Bora, is 9am the following morning at home in Ireland or the UK. So it seems that the UK has a new government, led by the Conservatives, Bora Bora, is a wonderfull place, very relaxing, and spectacular scenery, mind you, most of the places we have been so far have that... the scenery. We got up very late, like 08.30am... the skipper had a very bad night, sore throat. Even Donal was getting concerned, so we found a box of biofloxcin and shoveled a few into the boss to help control the situation. 09.00hrs, Laurent and Roma called to the boat, firstly to give an estimate for repairing the damage.

Graptolite - 2140 Miles Out
08:59.58S 124:19.02W Easter Monday PMWe had a 5lb dorado for lunch today. It's a much nicer fish than those bloody tuna. The fillets were lightly fried in butter with a little lime juice and smoked paprika and served over rice. Rick Stein, if you are reading this, you can include this recipe in your next book if you want.Guessing from the position reports, I think we got within about 17 miles of 'Northern Sky' today but no sighting and no VHF radio contact. Even so, people, and even people we know, that are just over the horizon counts as a party out here.As we are being rolled around quite a bit, sleeping is not usually the deeply refreshing experience it might be but it does mean that napping at other off-watch times is very easy. This slightly sleepy state seems to make time pass very.

Tucanon - Welcome to Bora Bora
A great number of people watched the start of the Tahiti Pearl regatta practice race on the afternoon of the 12th May, despite the pouring rain. There was very little wind and spinnakers were collapsing, one was twistedand it rained heavily.I don't believe that any of the WARC boats took part in the practice race.We didn't want to risk losing our berth so chose to watch rather thancompete. I don't know why other WARC boats hadn't taken part, perhaps forthe same reason as us, perhaps because of the rain, perhaps because therewas no wind or perhaps a combination of all of those reasons. When we were in Tahiti, the guide who showed us around the island told usthat they had two seasons in the Society islands, the wet season and thevery wet season. We are beginning to understand what she meant.

Tucanon - Hot boat, burnt feet, Faaroa
During Saturday afternoon Dick and I took the rib from our anchorage in Baie D'Avea, to find Marae Anini, round from Point Tiva. This was the first marae that we had seen where the walls had been constructed from slabs of volcanic rock rather than boulders. The location to me was just perfect with a flat terrace, below the walled building where rooms could be discerned, edged by a supporting wall built from boulders. Beyond the terrace was the lagoon, with a reef providing a natural terrace and then a further reef making yet another terrace. It all appeared very symbolic to me. To the south of the marae is Araara Pass, perfect for the access of canoes and other small craft. It was from here that the Maoris made their journey by canoe, to New Zealand.People were practicing surfing in the.

Asolare - Leg 4, Day 17 to Marquesas.

We clearly like each other’s company! More interesting to note is that we have not seen any of them since we left The Galapagos Islands. At that time we had 356 miles only to go and now at 1230Hrs GMT we have just 210 miles. We should therefore be in Hiva Oa early tomorrow morning, local time, as expected. No “yacht” photo today but a tranquil evening shot of Pink Flamingos roosting for the night on one foot on the Isabella Island in the Galapagos. Asolare - Leg 4, Day 16 to the Marquesas.
st1\:*{behavior:url(#default#ieooui) }Monday 24th March 2008Mr Amel, your perfect yacht has developed TWO faults – the wind speed indicator reads zero and the wind direction shows that we must be sailing backwards! Could it be something to do with the fact that we are closer to land as the attached photo shows! At 1355 UTC today we have just 389miles to go to Hiva Oa and expect to arrive there on Wednesday afternoon. The winds are still very light but have now increased to around 12 knots so we have put up our Parasailor again. With this wind there is little chance of getting the wing cords caught in the rigging – hopefully. I well remember when, during the ARC 2004, Sallyanne went up the mast in mid-Atlantic to free the wing cords from the rigging. I know I was more relieved to see her.

Voyageur - Log day 91 -The Agony & The Ecstasy
16 May 2010Agony is taking part in a race. Ecstasy is going to the après sail, in other words.... the parties! David and I are not cut out to be round the cans racers. We have neither the skill, the patience nor the nerve. With fifty boats tightly packed together with a spinnaker start off the town of Uturoa, the first venue of the Tahiti Pearl Regatta it was a nerve wracking experience. Craft of all kinds were bearing down on us from all directions. Many crews had chartered boats especially, and not feeling as precious about their craft as we were. There was the merest zephyr of a breeze which meant that the boats remained in very close proximity to each other for quite some time. Half an hour into the race and the unmistakeable sound, a sickening crunch of keel on coral, thankfully not.

Southern Princess - That Tears It!
Easter Monday 10:17S 133:10WThis is a rally NOT a race! I keep telling my self this however when Storyteller gets ahead it seems to concentrate the mind a little. A week ago Storyteller took off on a different tack and for a period flew it's A Sail. A stands for asymmetrical and they are also know as a MPS (Multi purpose sail) or a Gennacker (being a cross between a genoa and a spinnaker). In other words they are a light weight sail made from spinnaker type material and instead of being flown from a pole, they are tacked down to the yacht right forward. Anyway they ended up crossing in front of us and then I made a tactical blue and they ended up even further ahead. Listening to discussion on the radio net we I formed the opinion that they had not.

Lady Kay - Three quarters of the way
Hi allThree quarter of the way there today hopefully. Some large boats arriving later today. Wind has slowed down, but seas are still quite bouncy. You need to brace yourself when carrying out any activity e.g. making bread. Still working on banana recipes and now pumpkin recipes as well as we have just cut into the enormous pumpkin we bought in Galapagos. Luckily it is a really good one.Cheers for nowJackie, Kerry & MichaelBracing baking_1_1.

A Lady - Sailing around the World
Saturday, 15th MAY 2010 ( Presently in Tahaa ) 06.00hrs up and about again in paradise on earth. The race today is around the island of " Tahaa" inside the lagoon, the wind is light and the starting area is very close to where we were moored for the night.08.33hrs our start, a port fetch this time ( as all the other starts were down wind) and the course is clockwise around the Island. The channel is wide in most places, about a half mile, but it gets very narrow in some sections, and tacking could be tricky and the distance is approx 17 miles. Like the other days, we started in the last bunch of boats, so had to crawel our way through the fleet, for us, the two boats we really want to beat are "Ocean Jasper " and " Crazy Horse", our American.

A Lady - Sailing around the World with the World ARC 2010
Friday, 14th May 2010 ( presently in Bora Bora ) Up, bright and early again, but , we had a lot of rain over night again. After a light breakfast, we raised anchor and set off for the race area. Today's race is from Bora Bora to Tahaa, a distance of 22 miles.08.30hrs our start, and our group were last off again, so we had all these slower boats to pass before getting clear air.The weather was beautiful as usual, but the wind was light, so we sailed NW out the Pass and kept going, while everyone else gybed and went south towards our next destination, but in the long run, it paid big benefits and when we gybed, we had clear air and sailed past the whole fleet very quickly. When we cleared the SW corner of the reef, we were looking good and trucking along nicely, the wind was now.

Graptolite - 2025 Miles Out
08:59.93S 122:24.69W Easter Monday 11:00 UTCSeeing the lights of a fishing boat dead ahead last night came as a surprise. It was my first sighting of any other boat, or even aircraft, since leaving Puerto Ayora. They didn't seem to want to talk on the radio. It can get lonesome on night watch here.According to the patchy figures we get on the daily SSB radio net, we seem to have caught up with the tail-end of the fleet that set out from Puerto Ayora two and a half days before us. Unfortunately, there are also a few boats that set off after us that are now ahead but as they're real racing yachts it's not too embarrassing. We watched the DVD of 'Master & Commander, Far Side of the World' during a rain shower earlier. There are some good scenes set in the Galapagos Islands that we can.

Crazy Horse - May 15th
Crazy Horse is here anchored off the island of Tahaa. There is a lagoon or waterway that goes around the entire island. This lagoon is where we will conduct the third day of the race. We are supposed to tour around the entire island before completing this day's race. That can be a challenge to sail for any boat in a narrow channel around in a circle. Well, what isn't a challenge for the boat and crew of Crazy Horse lately. We have had some good luck at times too.I will be glad when we can finish this regatta and can tour the island of Tahaa and Bora Bora. I would love to see the Vanilla Plantation on Tahaa. Perhaps we can stop in Bora Bora and go to the Yacht Club there and give them one of our MYC pennants. Will let you know what happens next.Rosemary, Bill and Matt.

Quasar V of Lleyn - log
Monday 24th MarchDAY OFF?Maybe it because were are heatheners, but Easter was not celebrated in any shape or form yesterday not even painting a few from our egg mountain which numbered about 130 when we left the Galapagos, but as it's a Bank Holiday today, we are giving ourselves the day off, no watches, no cooking or cleaning, just let the boat sail itself, relax, eat chocolate and drink wine all day!Well maybe not! Just the usual routine: JB & Lindsey topping up the batteries, Malcy doing jobs, JB making blueberry muffins, I made a Spanish omelette and Barry didn't catch any fish! More instructions from Talulah Ruby regarding their action against K8 and more correspondence flying backwards and forwards, but no word from the defendants! So on Quasar time ( -8 GMT) of 23:30 this.

Cleone - Leg 4 Day 15 - NSTR
OK, so what's this NSTR, then? Answers on a post-card, but actually it means Nothing Significant To Report! We've had another great day's sailing, and, noon UK time to noon UK time, we've covered another 164 miles, taking us 158 miles closer to Hiva Oa. Someone asked Elizabeth what she did to fill her time, and didn't she get bored? And Norfy and I have been asked the same thing often enough. And the answer from us all is a resounding No! We hand steer the boat most of the time, probably unlike most other boats (except Andante at the moment, because her autopilot is broken). Apart from the obvious fact that it saves power there are good reasons for this. First is that a person on the helm is much more in touch with their surroundings and with the boat. For instance, we've.

A Lady - Sailing around the World with World ARC 2010
Thursday, 13th May 2010 (Presently in Raiatea, Tahiti)06.00hrs Skipper got into emails and the blog, the daily penance, but it does give time alone before the rest get out of the scratchers, and start serving things like breakfast and tea, and generally take over your day, but its all great discipline, and we are enjoying the whole experience, even the small things like, leaking diesel, leaking water, frayed ropes, and frayed nerves,,... who would want to be without this bless! 07.30hrs We discussed race tactics before we left the dock, this is the first race of the "Pearl Regatta" and starts in Raiatea and ends in Bora Bora, a distance of 27 miles, some of which is inside the lagoons. 08.30hrs The race began, and the wind was from.

Crazy Horse - Sailing back to Tahaa
We have a little more wind today. It has been a pleasant day of sailing with winds at varying speeds but much more than yesterday. We are about 3 miles from the finish line. We hope to have a little rest tonight before the start again tomorrow at 8:30am.We had Tim Murphy from Cruising World, Editor-at-Large was sailing with us today. He is a pleasant fellow and a great sailor to have on-board. We had lots of good conversation on board today. It is nice to have another person sailing along with us for a change. The wind is up and lots of good excitment until we reach the finish line. Wonder if they will serenade us with drums again today as we cross the line. I will try to contain myself and not start dancing as I did yesterday.Rosemary, Bill, Matt and Tim aboard Crazy Horse.

Jus'Do It 3 - sunday dinner!
Monday 24th March 1200hrs.Spinnaker all day again yesterday, then doing the sensible thing and taking it down before dark to goosewing throughout the night. We see both Storyteller and Southern Princess in the distance, heading south behind us. We’re running dead downwind and maintaining a COG of 265’. The wind becomes light early morning with a very rolly sea. The wind strengthens from 9am on to 16-17 knots, maintaining a boat speed of 8-9 knots. We pass some orange buoys and assume they are long line fishing lines, albeit a long way out!. Seeing a few more birds now, but still no fish! However, due to some skillful planning by one of the crew,we enjoy a roast beef dinner yesterday and full English this morning - so no moans yet!Considering putting the spinnaker back up this.

Crazy Horse - May 13
Today was the first race in the Tahiti Pearl Rally. It was a frustrating day but we managed to finish the race even though there was not much wind down to the wire. There were drums playing as we crossed the finish line and I think they were as happy as we were to see us finally finish. They even called off the race later because of the lateness and no wind. Of course after the race we had a huge rainstorm with high winds. By that time we were thankfully anchored. There was a big party on a motu with tons of food and dancers and fire dancing. We just took the water taxi back to the boat and are exhausted after a full day of sailing, sun, sunburn, and frustration.Lots of our friends from the World ARC are doing this rally. It was good to see such a large showing of them and lots of other.
